In a recent paper published in Cell (10.1016/j.cell.2026.05.042), researchers identified a chloroplast photoprotection mechanism that may help crops maintain photosynthetic performance under high-light stress.

During periods of intense light, excess excitation energy promotes the formation of singlet oxygen, which can damage Photosystem II and contribute to photoinhibition.
The study showed that the ¹O₂-responsive protein MBS1 undergoes a conformational change and phase transition, forming lower-dynamic biomolecular condensates around the chloroplast envelope. These condensates act as a reversible optical shield, reducing light penetration and limiting further oxidative damage. In rice, increased expression of the native OsMBS gene improved high-light tolerance and increased grain yield across multi-year field trials.
Invent Biotechnologies supported this work through the use of the Minute™ Chloroplast Isolation Kit (CP-011), which was used to prepare intact chloroplasts for downstream imaging and optical transmission experiments. By providing a rapid and reliable method for chloroplast isolation, the kit enabled researchers to directly examine MBS1 binding at the chloroplast surface and test how the condensates altered light transmission. This highlights the value of Invent Biotechnologies’ organelle isolation tools for mechanistic plant biology, photosynthesis research, and studies of chloroplast stress responses.
